ENTANGLED
2/3 - 3/2 2024
Opening Reception: 2/3 6-9 pm
Cleo the Gallery is pleased to present ‘Entangled’ with work by Caitlin McDonagh. This exhibition features murals and works on paper inspired by folklore, flora, and fauna.
‘Entangled’ is the culmination of a month-long residency at Arts Southeast and the research gained from fully immersing herself in the culture of the Savannah Art scene. The research gleaned from conversations with local residents and observation of the natural elements present around the city is interwoven into McDonagh’s past practice. Color theory, symbology and symmetry are all a part of her transcription of the world surrounding the work. The themes of connection, self-cultivation, growth, loss, and renewal are interlaced with these studies and give the audience room to associate their own experience to the final landscapes.
There is an importance with this latest body of work to present both works on paper and murals as a collective practice. McDonagh’s relationship with past commissioned work, almost exclusively the mural she commits to, has greatly influenced her approach to her recent studio practice. This collection is a return to experimentation without limitation for the artist, a way to bridge the network of paintings on paper to her larger explorations on the walls. It is a restoration of allowing influence to flow from one practice to the other without the hesitation of commercial viability.
Caitlin McDonagh is a visual artist and muralist based in Victoria, CAN. She has previously exhibited at The Living Gallery Outpost in NYC, Madrona Gallery in Victoria, CAN and Regart in Lévis, CAN and completed residencies at MASS MOCA and Dripped on the Road. Her paintings are part of the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection at the Burnaby Art Gallery and her murals can be found across the U.S. and Canada.
